What if the spaces in between were to act as a catalyst for social engagement?
Downtown Sudbury’s urban grid is derived from the interruption caused by the curvilinear train tracks which is prominent in the southernmost edge of the downtown where the CP railway station resides. The tracks are monumental in Sudbury’s origin and heritage and yet this site that marks the tracks is overrun by a sea of insignificant parking and reflects the city’s priorities towards vehicles over people which holds no promise of future growth. By reclaiming space allotted for vehicles we are creating dynamic public spaces, providing affordable housing for families and students and introducing programs that encourage social interactions. We will be using commonly neglected voids (Ma) as a catalyst to realize these ambitions.
